About Me

Hello! My name is Sarah Walker. I am a travel enthusiast who is always looking forward to the next opportunity to be far gone on an adventure. I feel lucky to have grown up in a household where travel was a priority. No matter the scale or distance, the smallest encounter with a new place has the capacity to bring about a revitalizing perspective or a humbling little dose of awe. You can be far gone when you are engrossed in the experience of encountering the new. Seeing the Milky Way from the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, feeling parched in the Badlands, watching bison pass through a field in Yellowstone and snorkeling in the Cayman Islands are experiences that enriched my childhood and inspired me to keep adventuring.

As a language major in college, I studied abroad in Oviedo. I fell in love with the city in the enchanting region of Asturias, nestled in Spain’s verdant north coast. I knew that I had to return to Spain after graduating. Luckily, I found a job through a program with Spain’s Department of Education. I was assigned to work in the region of La Rioja, the beautiful land of wine, sometimes referred to by the locals as España Profunda, deep Spain. I lived there for two years, teaching English and exploring Europe. I will always treasure that time for the dear friends I met and for the magnificent adventures that came to be. The vast spread of rolling vineyards bordered by mountains, a glimpse of some crumbling castle from a bus window, the splashing of rich tempranillo wine, the salty smell of ham legs hanging in the shops and a rugged variety of the Castilian tongue that echoed through the maze of pinchos bars are things that will forever inhabit my dreams. They will always call me to return for more offerings of quixotic promise.

I created Far Gone travel to share helpful tips and information from my travel experiences, as well as stories and pictures for inspiration. There are so many amazing places to see and wonderful itineraries that can be enjoyed on a very reasonable budget. My career has been in the education field, so all of my travel has been done on a fairly modest income. I love visiting national parks or wilderness areas for hiking with my adopted chihuahua and I have really enjoyed a lot of places in Europe. I am excited for all the travel that awaits. Cheers to your next far gone adventure!
